Messi...Again!

Messi Won the Ballon D'or 2019 presented by France Football magazine, ahead of our No 4 Virgil Van Dijk.

Van Dijk who collected the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, Premier League Player of the Season and UEFA Men’s Player of the Year prizes earlier this year was unlucky if i may say, to not be crowned this year.

VVD is now the first Reds man to feature in the top three since Fernando Torres in 2008, and is only the second liverpool player to have finished 2nd in the competition, after King Kenny Dalglish in 1983.

The one and only Liverpool player who has won it was Michael Owen, the winner of the 2001 edition.

VAn Dijk reacted after the ceremony: “You need to respect greatness. I was close, but there was just someone a little bit better,”.

“I’m very proud of what I achieved last year, with Liverpool and Holland. Hopefully we can do it again this year.

The club had seven nominees on the 30-man shortlist , the Reds dominated the highest rankings with four representatives in the top 10, with all four in the Top 7.

Our 7 Reds finished as follow:

Virgil van Dijk - 2nd Sadio Mane - 4th Mohamed Salah - 5th Alisson Becker - 7th

Roberto Firmino - 17th Trent Alexander-Arnold - 19th Georginio Wijnaldum - 26th

Alisson Becker was awarded the Yachine Trophy for the best men's goalkeeper in world football on Monday night's ceremony

And About that he commented:

“It’s a great honour to be here with those great players, men and women,”
“I don’t feel lucky, I feel blessed and grateful. I also want to say thank you to my teammates, to all the Liverpool staff. Thank you very much.”
